When the Bridge Is Gone

Several years ago, I found myself at a washed-out bridge in a remote country. The road ended at a swollen river. Cars were lined up. There was no alternate route. Turning back meant hours lost. Waiting might mean being stranded overnight.

A local truck crossed first. It angled downstream, then turned into the current midway across. Water rose into the wheel wells. But it made it through.

It was not reckless. It was calculated.

I followed the same line. Halfway across, the rear of my truck began to lift and drift. For a moment, it could have gone either way. But the line was already chosen. Momentum mattered. We reached the other side.

Inflection Points Feel the Same

When companies reach inflection points, the bridge is often already gone.

The market shifts. Capital tightens. A launch underperforms. Technical debt surfaces. A key leader exits.

Waiting feels safer. But waiting narrows options. Turning back is rarely viable.

So leaders must choose a line through moving current.

The Cost of Half-Commitment

The mistake I see most often is not boldness. It is hesitation disguised as prudence.

Teams circle the problem. Spreadsheets multiply. Scenarios expand. Meanwhile, the current does not slow down.

Half-commitment creates the greatest risk: capital allocated cautiously, messaging hedged internally, direction communicated ambiguously, organizations feel uncertainty.

When momentum stalls midstream, correction becomes harder than initial commitment would have been.

Clarity Plus Commitment

Crossing the river was not about bravery. It was about three realities: the current would not weaken, the vehicle had defined limits, the line had to be chosen deliberately.

High-stakes product and technology decisions are no different.

You cannot eliminate risk. You can decide how to carry it.

Companies rarely fail because they chose a difficult path. They fail because they never fully committed to the one they chose.

At inflection points, clarity plus commitment matters more than caution plus ambiguity.

Standing still is not neutral. It is a decision.
